WEEK 4

Another week begins at camp, though it comes with a bit of a somber note. More than a third of the campers have died or gone missing, leaving a noticeable absence in camp. With five gone in one week, will anyone really be able to make it the full eight weeks? That is yet to be seen.

The weather has dipped a little, going down to the mid-70s. At least the pastier kids won't have to worry about sunburns, right? Though the waves coming off the lake have been starting to get a little high. And the RVs have changed once more, though anyone with a keen eye might notice that some of them look familiar...

The Wii is gone, and in its place is a shiny new WiiU, now sporting Bayonetta 2 and Splatoon in addition to the Wii games left behind. Unfortunately, there's no internet, so you're stuck with single player mode only. Leon, Mami, Clarke, Kon, and Natsume are now gone from the Mii menu, and the music has changed again.

This week there seems to be a baseball diamond set up in the field, and there will probably be sports-themed activities later on. But with only 18 living campers left, will anyone really be in the mood for some games?

[ Pity is generally not something Boa ever accepts, but... in the form of extra food that is good? He'll make an exception. ]

[A part of Lance would really like to say "NO SHIT" and be all cocky about this, but considering the ass kicking they took from Zarkon and how they all barely managed to escape and the fact that he's really just hoping everyone else made it out of the disintegrating wormhole ok, the smary reply just doesn't come at all.

He swallows dryly.]

...I know Blue picked me for a reason. Sometimes I'm not sure what that reason is.

[ Boa looks at Lance in silence for a moment. It's a lot of doubt for a loudmouth to be exhibiting so suddenly, in his opinion. ]

Do you need to be sure of it? It's not like it will be undone whether or not you agree with the reason, so it's your position anyway.

[ And it's a pretty awesome position, from the sounds of it. ]

[Lance helps himself to another sip of water, musing over this in silence. He doesn't know why the heck he's talking to Mowgli about this, but surprisingly the response .... is kinda helpful in bringing some clarity to the issue.]

I guess... being stuck here and separated from Blue and the rest of the Voltron team makes questioning things like that a lot easier. When you're fighting a war, you don't have time to wonder about this stuff, you just have to fight until you can't fight anymore.

[A beat.]

The Voltron lions are amazing. They're alive, in a way. They choose you to pilot them and only you can pilot. They speak to you and they come to you in times of need. I used to be able to connect with Blue like that, but ever since I've been here, it's like... our connections been severed. Maybe it's just the people in charge messing with things somehow, but maybe it's Blue who's moved on.

I can't tell you if your lion moved on or not, but it's not at all unrealistic for it to be the powers in charge here. I've been told we're even beyond the reach of gods.

[ So no matter how cool this lion sounds (and it does, Boa is liking this description), it's probably hard for it to get through to here. ]

[Hm. He's going to have more bites of food and water.]

In a way, I guess in a roundabout way, that just makes me more nervous about what these guys are really capable of. Altean alchemy is some of thr strongest, most magical stuff in my universe and even with that we still have a hard time beating back Zarkon's army.

What if these guys decide they're not satisfied just doing these smaller experiments on just a handful of kids every year. They'd be an entirely new curse upon the universe. ... All universes.

[ Boa nods with a serious expression. ]

I was thinking the same thing. But it doesn't really make any sense... They're powerful enough to grab us and toss us back at will from other worlds and times, but the hunters can contain this test site with just firearms? Is it just an agreement they have made with our captors? It's just... weird.

Maybe whatever they're using as a power source is limited and that's why they need the hunters so they don't expend all their energy trying to keep us from escaping.

Maybe....

It doesn't really sound like they're a team, but they're also not not cooperating either... I don't really get it.

You know, maybe the hunters are a little like Stan, and they've all had their minds totally wiped and altered to believe they're doing something to protect everyone else outside camp.

[Just a thought. Not something he can necessarily prove.]

... shit. I hadn't even thought of that possibility yet.

[ What is wrong with this place and all its mind fuckery?! How do they get a refund. ]

That's a good point to keep in mind.

Yeah, not that I'm thrilled about keeping the idea that they could also be, in a sense, victims in mind, but..it doesn't seem impossible either.

It takes a lot for people to shoot at a kid and not be even a little remorseful about it, after all.

I don't think we really have the time to consider pitying them, but it's good to consider out options if we want to figure out what's going on and how to get out of it.

Whether or not they are victims doesn't really matter to me at this point anymore.

[Lance makes a face.]

Hey, don't get it twisted. I'm in no way about to get teary eyed about those guys and whatever's going on with them. Whatever the reason, they're an existential threat to us now, and it'd be dumb to lose sight of that.

[ That gets a small grin as reply, before Boa finishes his food. ]

Your cooking really isn't bad.

[ Which is to say 'you are overall a cooler guy than anticipated but I will not tell you this directly because you'd make me want to change my mind again instantly'. ]
