Week 7 - Trial(?)

TRIAL(?)

On Saturday, everyone gathers around the campfire as usual. However, there are a few more people missing this time, as only seven of you appear for the trial.

Red and Archer are there, though, and after giving each other a look Red is the one who steps forward to speak.

"Some things happened last night, and as a result Cielo and Richie have died. Given the timing of their deaths, they satisfy the death requirement for the trial, and as such we will have no trial today.

Go back to your cabins and rest up. We will have a lot to do next week."

Red and Archer will be around to answer questions, but the remaining campers are otherwise free to go about their business and spend this weekend resting.

[His head lifts when he hears the voice, but he doesn't turn to face Nine.]

...Hello.

[And that's the only response before he continues selecting ingredients. There's various fixings in there, but he just needs the basics, some butter, meat, mayo, enough to taste alright and give him some nourishment.]

[ Nine is going to move closer to peek around him, while placing a hand on his back. ]

What the hell are you going to do with the butter?

[ Don't put it on the meat. That is not what you do. ]

...For the bread?

[What are you expecting out of him here, Nine. It's a sandwich.

-Oh, there's even some lettuce in here. He'll grab a little of that, too.]

Nine tilts his head. ]

Does it even taste good with all of that other stuff?

[ he's had buttered toast. But he hasn't had butter on bread with other sandwich ingredients. ]

[Feral cat is too tired to protest, keep this in mind for belling him.]

It's not bad.

[But he also really doesn't care too much about taste right now. Unless Nine keeps him there, he's going to send a couple of the ingredients along with telekinesis while he balances the others in the hand not occupied with the staff, taking them to a table to assemble his meal.]

[ He'll let him go. Nine is grabbing a spoon and then he'll watch him assemble his sandwich. ]

You should add in some chips, yo. Add an extra crunch.

[ Leaning a hip against the table as he starts to eat from a jar of peanut butter. ]

You know, I still plan on keeping my word.

[He glances at Nine to answer him, but then he sees Nine eating peanut butter out of a jar and reconsiders that, turning back to just. Making the damn sandwich.]

And what was that?

[ Hey it's good? ]

I'm not going to let anyone touch you. That means that organization and whatever the hell they throw at us.

[Judging]

-You still think that's a good idea?

Yeah, I do. [ No hesitation. ] I'm going to save you and everyone else.

[ This would probably be more convincing if it wasn't for the spoonful of peanut butter there in his hand. ]

Then I'll take them apart.

[He releases a soft breath.]

[He will sorely need it.]

[ He'll put the jar and spoon down to move in close. Just going to throw an arm around him to give him a hug. ]

Hey, at least there's only a week left of camp, yo.

[He goes stiff at the touch, because this is Mittens, but he is at least not pushing Nine away.]

...Exactly. One week.

We have until midnight on Sunday, specifically.

[ He doesn't move his arm. Keeping it there cause sometimes having something solid is good.]

But if there's no hope, I'm still planning on killing them all.

[ The group knows too much. Know about him, probably about the classified things... ]

Have to dish out some payback, yo. And Mother would want it.

As much as I'd like to help... [And he says that easily, because the bloodlust for revenge is strong here, stronger even than it was back in Vision with that stupid Emperor--] that's when the final protocol is triggered.

[ Thinking. ]

Yeah, and we don't know what the hell they will do to start it.

[ He frowns as he rubs his scar with his free hand. ]

You know, we could always knock you out before it happens.

[He makes quite a face at that suggestion, having already been knocked out three (as far as he knows) times already.

He chews lightly on his lip before he replies.]

Do you think that would stop them?

I think it'll force 'em to pick someone else. If they haven't already, yo.

[ Because those profiles said they were suitable candidates at the time, but a number of things could change it, right? ]

Would be better if we knew what the hell they do to start it up.

Red has some amount of control over things.

[That... on and off power.]

We don't know what they have up their sleeves. They could...

[He trails off, shoulders tense in that half-hug. Sandwich making has been completely forgotten by now.]

I don't know if there's a way besides elimination.

[ There's a twisting feeling inside of him as his mind goes to elimination. He knows it's true. Killing Mitsuru could mess that up...

He waves his hand. ]

Nu-uh. No. There's no way in hell we're doing that, yo. Besides, even if we do kill you, they might have a back-up already planned. You know, like Red.

[ Red has been compromised and he remembers what Ren said to him... ]

[It's a possibility, one he's been aware of since the truth was revealed, one he still considers very much valid. With Ichigo's death he's the last one remaining, and given the mystery that shrouds his death, it's hard to dismiss the fact that he could very well have died because of his status as one of the candidates.

Part of him wonders how he's the one who's survived this long.]

Everyone here is so... soft.

[It's so hard to understand, sometimes. Traveling in Vision, he removed whatever was in his way without worry nor remorse. And yet here he is, a threat among them, and there's all this reluctance, all this defiance at the idea removing him.

Why?]

[Soft. It's not something he would have applied to himself before. ]

Guess it kind of rubbed off on me, yo. I mean, if I was told to kill everyone at the get go, I would have.

[ But... he got attached. The memories with the dead stayed and he had to actually slow down and deal. ]

Boa, Chuuta, Ren, Ichigo, Tal and the others... they gave me something I didn't have before. And I want to protect it for as long as can.

...That would make two of us.

[Not that this is necessarily surprising, given their discussions before.]

I want him back. [Boa, that is.] But I'm beginning to wonder just how much help I am on this side.

[The tension's leaking from his shoulders now, relaxing into exhaustion. He thought he was capable of so much, but in the end, what had he done here, really? Prolong his life so he could keep suffering right up until the end?]

[ He's glad that he seems to be relaxing. ]

They already have plenty of badasses on that side, yo. Besides, someone needs to help out the other Mitsuru on this side with braining stuff.

[ It's not going to be Nine. Just look who is left, Mittens. And yes, he's calling him a badass and brains. ]

[He's been called many things, but baddass isn't really one he's expecting. It has him tilting his head in Nine's direction in surprise, though he soon turns back to stare at the counter again.]
