WEEK 8

The weekend passes in a blue, and suddenly it is Monday again. Monday of week 8, the final week of camp. The last week to try and change your fate.

It's sunny and pleasant, with daytime temperatures lingering around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and dropping off into the 50s in the evening. It's pretty much the perfect weather for Michigan, and it's only a shame that it took this long to get to it.

The WiiU continues to be broken, though the creepy Mii is gone now. All of the Miis are, actually. All that can be seen is a variety of Pure Michigan ads, interestingly enough. A bit calmer than last week's visuals, but probably annoying since no games can be played.

There is one other notable change about camp: the counselors are nowhere to be found. There is plenty of food and some note left on how to run things, but otherwise the campers have been left to their own devices apparently.

On the main door to the lodge is a note that says "We will be back as soon as possible." written in Red's handwriting. What could this mean?

[Ah. Well, at least he's no longer doing his unsettling routine of ripping his entire face off, so Lenka manages to look up to check on not-quite-Lance and finds him -- in the midst of taking quite possibly the worst selfie ever, because there's probably still a little skin hanging off, strips of petoskey stone gleaming poisonously in the light.

He doesn't really want to know what else is on that phone either. But not-quite-Lance's selfie skills are way too speedy for him to really register how to escape before he's been tugged straight into it, protesting and making faces all the way.

(I guess what we're saying here is that Zance is becoming a walking selfie stick.)]

Uh, Lance-- I don't think-- [is it cursed to be in a photograph with the dead, because it sure feels that way right now] I didn't mean right now.

[It's a little bit petulant. He's not used to taking pictures in the first place, much less being ambushed with them.]

[ The first part isn't something he can wrap his head around. What if time passes in their world? Mother would have noticed something off it it's only his soul brought to here. But he can't picture past what he's doing presently here or what he hopes to happen after they save everyone.

Shaking his head, while deciding to just focus on what he usually do. ]

It was fighting just before I got here. The year before that it was just training, yo. [ There wasn't much else to his life... just Mother, the rest of Class Zero, and fighting.

It...bothers him. ]

[It's all he has left, there's more he wants to say, of course, there's always more. But that is all he can convey in one go and once the words are out he's yawning loudly, reaching up to scratch at his side burns.

It's a familiar motion but now there's enough stone at the base that when he does it brittle hairs break off of stone roots.]

You sure you're not going to stay here?

[Though it looks like he's about to fall asleep sitting up now.]

[None of that is the word cheese, damn it, Lenka. But you know what, that selfie is getting taken anyway and as soon as his phone makes the camera shutter sound, Lance brings the phone up to his face.

Yep, that sure is the worst selfie ever. But apparently not for the reasons Lenka thinks.]

Man, Lenka, you ruined it. Why'd you have to blink and not be smiling, huh?

[SIGH.]

Okay seriously? We're doing this as many times as needed, you hear?!

[Lance raises him arm again, but shudders to a stop, His neck cracks loudly as he turns to look at Lenka.]

[ The grin changes to something warmer. This is definitely happiness. Popcorn is going to be a direct hit, but if throws any more he'll try to catch with his mouth. ]

This game's not as fun without the booze, yanno.

That ain't the whole story, it's just the setup. Any good horror story has to have a great backstory!

Anyway, I read part'a the story in a really old tome, once. It's only a couple paragraphs, so it's a little frustrating to not know the whole thing, you know?

[ there's also the possibility that, because the tome was in Gensokyo, the story itself isn't the real deal, and just manifested out of someone's belief that this part of Cow Head was legit. so, she's suspicious of it. ]

It's a ghost story. It's about ghosts. The story wouldn't be spooky if it was about bad construction.

[ Luckily she seems completely oblivious to it, so there won't be any teasing...for now. ]

So, is Drew your real name? Or is it just a nickname? [ bc 'drew' is not the name you'd expect said million-year-old tamagotchi to have

I mean, it's kind of hard to resist if you're gonna be all serious about it.

[ Because that's the best part, no matter what Lance says- throwing ridiculous shenanigans at the brick wall of Lenkaness and seeing where it cracks. ]

But I get it. You need us to move so you can really get a good look, huh? [ That's absolutely not what he's saying, but it's an explanation that seems to satisfy her zombie brain, and she does indeed let go, taking a step back and posing a little. Why this. ] Go ahead, take it all in~

[This really isn't sleepover talk, is it. Why are they like this.

At least they're munching.

He does look up again when Mitsuru brings that up, though, curiously. He doesn't exactly have good associations with the word leverage, but they're not bad associations, either. It very much depends on how everything turns out, in the end.]

[Look, the word cheese isn't even in his photo reflex, that's how little he's used to getting his picture taken. Lenka's still scrambling to back out of camera range, because he has to be stubborn about this and apparently not realize that discretion may be the better part of valor, here.

Still real bad with coralfam: an autobiographical yell.]

I don't really take pictures like that... [does he even know what a selfie is, honestly] ... Lance?

[By this point, Lenka's at least got some inkling that when their coral friends suddenly stop operation, that means he should probably be paying attention. He freezes in his selfie struggles obligingly, too, just in case that helps.]

Really? You're lucky, I wish I didn't have to go to school. [The one-two punch of being generally below average academically and being constantly bullied makes it hard to see any value in attending school.]

Ah. I guess it makes sense that it's a drinking game...

[He has not gotten into the beer at home, but it seems to be a pretty popular coping mechanism, so maybe something like that is also in his future considering. Everything here and everything there. Hmmmm.]

[The annoyed expression falters in its intensity as well and smoothens into a tired resignation. Pointedly, Lance keeps his eyes on Lenka and away from the mirrors.]

Lenka. I need you to steal my phone and keep it with you for when our bodies get taken away so that we can still talk to you guys.

Well... I still had to learn things. We just didn't really have school.

[The home-schooled and military-schooled life, man. He only has any idea of school-related things secondhand, like everything else, from records and anecdotes and fiction. It's far removed enough from his reality that despite all the complaining, he kind of wants to try it in the idle sort of way you think about trying to revive the dinosaurs or going to the moon.]

[And he stares back determinedly, concentrating on the message to the exclusion of all else -- including the, ah, facemask aftermath -- but Lenka does tilt his head slightly in confusion at those instructions. The dead have never communicated in any other way before, but Red has a phone, so...?

No, he still hasn't figured out the way from Point A to Point G. He is frowning deeply now, because following the plan of action he registers taken away and that's...]

... I can do that. What do I need to do with the phone?

[He wants to ask about the coralfam but that's going to need to be lower priority than communication.]

Oh. Summer, too.

[They really are drowning in summer children here. He does quietly file away the date for later, though, because that's the sort of thing you do on the whole.]

By the curse -- you mean the curse of this camp?

[They are kind of cursed. Maybe multiple curses at this point.]

[ Going to try to make it back at her and then he stops mid-chitter. ]

Wait. That's not important, yo!

[It's always a good idea, in a place like this, to focus on the here and now.

There's slightly less darkness here than in anything behind or before you, the long road they took to get here and all the corpses they stepped over, the uncertain future awaiting them. Lenka is still clinging to what they can do now tooth and claw, even if it's all tangled up in the future he isn't sure he wants to look at.

Most of them are probably the same, the last of the living. They'll make it through this week.

They'll deal with the rest as it comes.]

Training for a year and then fighting. [he peers at Nine's expression] Did you have a war back home, too? A lot of us do.

[Summer and wars. It's probably nothing more than coincidence, or maybe they expect that child soldiers are more likely to take each other out. He's not sure, but it feels a little different from that, what they've all been doing. What they've been trying to do.]

Well, it's not a lot different, but I think more of us have... been paying visits?

[There was last week, when they'd started bringing snacks and pictures and several of them had probably made an effort to clean things up after... the mess left by Shirou the weekend before that. The second death in the chapel, where the first was entirely clean; this time they'd had to do it themselves.

There's likely also other sundry attempts at offerings from campers who are more-or-less acquainted with worship or gods, along with a little pot of brilliant red-and-yellow flowers that's been there since Tuesday last week. It seems to have been diligently watered.]
