WEEK 5 - TRIAL

TRIAL

It takes a full day after finding the body, but on Saturday, the counselors call you all to the campfire, the bonfire already roaring away as everyone finds their seats. Stan and Red are seated there, with Stan holding a box saying 'VOTES' written on it.

It looks like you're here to find the killer.

And just like before, you know you'll be forced to vote before the night's over...

And condemn someone to a grisly fate.

VICTIM: Usagi Tsukino
CAMPERS REMAINING: 15

((Remember that Everyone must vote and that Votes are due by 6pm EST!))

Better them than me...

[ His voice is quiet but he does manage to respond somewhat evenly. ]

I don't want them to die, but they always do... and better them than me...

So there are things you have to live for, Boa. What are they?

[There's something a little more solid there, behind the question; it's a genuine one.

Boa's sentiment isn't one Lenka can relate to at all, so perhaps they're doomed to never see eye-to-eye on something like that. Or maybe Boa is the normal one, the one who knows what usual survival looks like out here -- the problem being that survival is judged not by the world but by those of them also trying to survive.

What can they find, at the end of that?]

[ Boa stares at Lenka in silence for a moment. This question, it's...

Talcott wanted to save his world, Lance his... it's always like that, but Boa...? He has goals, but they're his and... ]

... myself. Isn't that enough?

[ Isn't it enough to just want to be alive for his own sake? It isn't, not here. But Boa knows he can't change anyway. ]

Yes. It's enough.

[His voice is a little gentler, because he's not asking him to justify himself or his existence.

That's not the purpose of the question, and it's not something he'd put on anyone else, much less one of the younger kids. It's more...]

What I'm asking, Boa, is... what you want to do once camp is over. What survival looks like to you. That's what I want to know. [a small pause, and then he decides to go on, because it's a time of misunderstandings and he'll have to use his words a little more than usual] It will help the rest of us. We won't give up. We'll take back everything we've lost.

[It might be a bit strange that he can say that here and now, but there's no wavering. It's something he's decided some time ago. And he's not turning from it. There's nowhere to turn anymore.]

I wanted to go see Derry.

[ It's nowhere near his main goals, but somehow it comes to mind first. But what's the point of saying it now, when they hate him? Even if nobody was going to kill him, he'd never be able to follow Richie and Eddie anywhere.

Boa's fists grab into his uniform and tear at it as he tries to suppress the despair. ]

I wanted to go back home. I wanted to grow stronger. I wanted to fight in the God Bladers Cup, I wanted to beat... R-red Eye....

[ And that's too much. The thought of his old idol whom he'd never beat, never see again. Boa can't do it.

He just screams. ]

[Lenka's eyes widen a little bit, but really, he should have expected this -- because there's still a part of Boa that wants to walk away from this, refuses to face up to what's in front of him, what they both know is coming. He presses his lips into a thin line before evening out his expression.

Lowers himself so that he's in Boa's line of sight before reaching out and taking his shoulders, trying to steady and stop him from tearing too much at himself.]

I'm sorry. [there are goals he recognizes, in there, others he doesn't; but they're all real regardless, and there was a reason he'd asked for them here and now] Boa. Listen to me. We won't give up. We'll remember, I'll remember, so don't forget what I'm about to tell you.

We won't let this be the end.

[Perhaps it will be hard for Boa to hear what he's saying, here and now. The execution is closing in on them, after all. Of course it is. But he says it anyway, in the hopes that his soul will remember it later.]

[ There is no response from Boa anymore. He wishes for nothing more than to be able to believe Lenka, whole-heartedly believe that he's not walking towards oblivion now. But he's spent his short little life looking down on naivety. He can't start exhibiting it himself now. He'll die. That's just the fact of it. He'll die and that is the only certainty left now.

He wishes he could face it with dignity. That would be the way he'd like to see his life end. But in the end, he is 11, and he's so terribly afraid. He'll face death with puffy eyes and snotty nose, crying all the while. ]
